That is the number we can see, verify and refresh every day. The government's number is different. So is almost every network's own number. All three can be honest at the same time. This post shows the working.
Why does India's charging station count change depending on who you ask?
Because three different things get called a charger, and almost nobody says which one they mean.
- A station, or site, is one address. One highway plaza, one mall basement, one petrol pump forecourt.
- A charge point is one machine at that address. A busy hub can hold six or eight of them.
- A connector, or gun, is one cable you actually plug in. A single DC charge point often carries two.
So one site can be counted as 1, or 8, or 16, and nobody has lied. Two more splits sit on top of that. Public versus captive — a charger inside a fleet depot or a gated society is real, but you cannot drive up and use it. And installed versus live — a charger can be commissioned, reported and counted weeks before it is switched on, connected to a network and visible to a driver.
What do the official government figures say?
Ministry of Heavy Industries figures, reported through PIB, put India above 29,000 public charging points as of early 2026, up from roughly 5,000 in 2022. That is their count, on their definition, and it is the right number to quote when you want the official line. The same official framing puts India at roughly one public charger for every 235 EVs on the road, against a global benchmark of one per 6 to 20.
Our 22,913 sits below that, and it should. We count stations, not charge points. We count what is public and independently verifiable. And we count what is live now, not what has been sanctioned under FAME II or PM E-DRIVE and is still being wired up. Read the two numbers as answers to two different questions: how much charging India has funded and installed, versus how much charging a driver can find and use tonight.

Two honest notes on that table. First, ChargeZone's row counts mapped charge points, because that is the level its data reaches us at — read it as the largest footprint in the country, not as 9,149 separate addresses. Second, Hindustan Petroleum and HPCL eCharge appear as two rows because they arrive as two distinct operator brands in the feeds we aggregate: the same oil marketing company, counted the way the chargers identify themselves.
The shape behind each number matters more than the ranking. ChargeZone, out of Vadodara, is a highway-corridor DC specialist and shows up in around 1,500 cities on our map, strongest in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana. Tata Power EZ Charge is destination-heavy: 2,442 stations across 424 cities, and of 5,138 mapped guns only 2,045 are DC — a lot of AC points at malls, hotels and offices. Zeon is the specialist's specialist, with 467 stations across 262 towns and 240 of them in Tamil Nadu alone. Statiq is Delhi-NCR-out, at 673 stations across 174 cities.
How many of India's charging stations are genuinely fast?
563. That is how many stations in India offer 150 kW or faster DC charging on Wattway's live map as of August 2026. Against 22,913 total, that is roughly one in forty.
That ratio is the real story of Indian charging in 2026. Coverage has arrived. Speed is still arriving. Most of what has been built is AC, or DC in the 30 to 60 kW band — fine for a mall stop, slow for a highway run. The DC share by network says the same thing: on our map ChargeZone shows 2,578 DC guns of 4,227 mapped, Statiq 1,431 of 2,008, Zeon 684 of 1,034, Tata Power 2,045 of 5,138. Plan a long drive around the DC map, not the total map.
Is India's charging network big enough yet?
Enough is a moving target. The official ratio of roughly one public charger per 235 EVs, against a global benchmark of one per 6 to 20, makes India look far behind. Hold that comparison gently. India's EV fleet skews heavily towards two- and three-wheelers, which charge at home or at a wall socket far more often than they queue at a DC gun, so a straight charger-per-EV ratio flatters car-heavy countries. The sharper question for a car owner is the one our 563 answers: how many places can put 150 kW into a battery while you finish a coffee. That is the number that needs to grow fastest.
How does Wattway count charging stations?
Three ideas, in this order: aggregate, dedupe, verify.

Aggregate
We pull from multiple operator feeds and public sources on a rolling schedule — some every few minutes, some daily, some weekly. Every station carries the source it came from. - 2
Normalise
Names, connector types, power ratings and addresses arrive in a dozen shapes. We map them to one schema, so a CCS2 gun is a CCS2 gun everywhere. - 3
Dedupe
The same mall gets listed by the operator, by the platform running its software, and by a directory. We match on evidence — location, operator, connectors — and merge, treating the site's own operator as the authority. - 4
Verify live status
Where an operator exposes live gun status, we poll it. The dot on the map should reflect the charger now, not the day it was added. - 5
Community verification
Drivers check in at stations, flag a dead gun, confirm a working one, and add what the listing missed. Human eyes are the last filter, and often the fastest one.
It is not perfect, and it leans one way on purpose. A station we cannot independently confirm does not go on the map, so 22,913 is a floor, not a ceiling. We would rather be short by a few hundred than send someone 30 km to a charger that was never there.

Why do network claims and map counts disagree?
Because they count different things, and mostly in good faith. Statiq's 2026 marketing cites 10,000-plus chargers across 1,014-plus cities; we independently verify 673 stations in 174 cities. That gap is not a scandal — the company figure counts chargers rather than sites, includes AC, and includes the roughly 2,800 BPCL chargers Statiq won a tender to integrate in July 2024, which arrive in phases. ChargeZone's own site says 13,500-plus charging points in 350-plus cities while 2026 press coverage quotes 15,000-plus; we see 9,149 charge points across around 1,500 cities.
Zeon is the interesting counter-example. Its homepage claims 500-plus locations and 1,000-plus charge points. We independently track 467 stations and 1,034 mapped guns. That is close enough to call the company's public number honest, which in this industry is worth saying out loud.
So what should you actually quote?
